Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo. – Collecting 25 hits over both games, Trinity opened their eight-game spring break road trip with a split doubleheader against Columbia (Mo.), dropping the opener 10-6 before taking a 12-8 win over the Cougars on Tuesday.
Jordan Veldman led the Trolls (5-10) at the plate in the nightcap, going 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and a team-leading three RBI. Oliver Carmody finished 3-for-5, while the trio of Hunter Slaats, Angel Toscana, and Ryan Grand all had multi-hit performances in the win.
After falling behind 6-0 after two innings, the Trolls rallied for five runs on three hits in the top of the 3rd. The first five batters would reach base for Trinity, resulting in two early runs on Anthony Cappelletti's hit-by-pitch, and a walk drawn by Michael Moralez. Nick Andersen earned a sac fly, before Brock Bolser and Toscana each earned RBIs with a single and HBP, respectively.
A leadoff triple from Veldman in the top of the 4th allowed the senior to score on a passed ball to tie the game at 6-6. Two more runs would come home in the inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Toscana to give the Trolls an 8-6 advantage.
The Cougars (14-7) would tie the game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Trolls responded again in the top of the 5th, with an RBI triple from Veldman, followed by a run-scoring single from Cappelletti. Another two-RBI base hit from Veldman in the 6th added a pair of insurance runs, as reliever Adam Herron shut the door with just one hit allowed over the final three innings.
In the first game of the day, Trinity would an early deficit, scoring two runs in the 4th and four more in the 5th to claim a 6-4 lead. Columbia would rally back with a six-run bottom of the 5th to take the opener. Toscana would go 2-for-4 at the plate in game one, with a pair of RBI and a triple. Nick Andersen was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run.
The Trolls continue the road trip on Wednesday, with a doubleheader against Missouri Valley. First pitch from Marshall, Mo. is set for 1:00 p.m.
