Box Score 2 PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity held on to their seat atop the CCAC standings, after securing a split in Tuesday's doubleheader with St. Ambrose at the Schaaf Athletic Complex. Following a 15-2 loss in the opening game, the Trolls bounced back to win the second, 10-7.
The Trolls' (18-17, 12-5 CCAC) recent struggles at the plate continued through the first game, as Trinity has just two hits until finally breaking through in the bottom of the 7th. Three straight singles from Michael Moralez, Anthony Cappelletti, and Hunter Slaats set the table for two runs to come home on Preston Moore's fielder's choice and a St. Ambrose error.
The Bees (15-20, 10-5 CCAC) took an early lead, hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first, then doing it again in the 3rd for a 4-0 advantage. In the top of the 10th, the visitors would put the game out of reach, scoring ten runs on six hits and a pair of Trinity errors.
Trinity's breakthough late in the first game carried over into the second, with the Trolls collecting five runs in the first two innings. RBI singles from Nick Andersen and Jordan Veldman gave the Trolls an early 2-0 lead in the 1st. After the Bees tied the game in the top of the 2nd, the Trolls posted three more runs on three hits and an error to reclaim a 5-2 lead.
St. Ambrose would take the lead with four runs in the 3rd, and tack on another in the 6th for a 7-5 edge, but the Trolls would respond in the bottom half of the inning. Veldman drew a bases-loaded walk, then a bad pickoff throw would allow Angel Toscana to score to tie the game. Moralez then doubled in the next at-bat, driving in two runs and giving the Trolls the lead the rest of the way.
Moralez and Brian Huttner each recorded three base hits in the win. Gunnar Bettenhausen picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings without allowing a run. Jake Ostrowski earned a two-inning save with a scoreless 8th and 9th to give Trinity the win.
The Trolls now prepare for a three-game series with Olivet Nazarene, beginning on Friday in Bourbonnais. The Tigers then make the return trip to Schaaf on Saturday afternoon, for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
