Box Score DAVENPORT, Iowa – A seven-run sixth inning was enough to put Trinity over the top on Tuesday afternoon, as the Trolls picked up a win over conference leaders St. Ambrose, 9-7 to take two of three in the series.
The Trolls (21-22, 15-9 CCAC) struck first in the top of the 2nd, when the first two batters reached base, setting up an RBI groundout for Oliver Carmody and a 1-0 advantage. The Bees (20-23, 15-8 CCAC) bounced back in the 3rd, taking the lead with a two-run home run.
Carmody tied the game with another run-scoring opportunity in the 4th, driving in Hunter Slaats after he singled, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Another two-run shot for the home team would highlight a three-run bottom of the 5th, giving St. Ambrose a 5-4 lead.
A total of seven runs on seven hits put the Trolls on top, beginning with three straight singles to lead off the rally. Brian Huttner's fielder's choice and Angel Toscana's RBI base hit put the Trolls back in front, before run-scoring singles from Preston Moore, Anthony Cappelletti, and Michael Moralez helped Trinity build their lead.
St. Ambrose would post runs in the bottom of the 7th and 8th, but Trinity would work out of trouble in each of the final three innings, as the Bees stranded two runners on base in each frame.
Cappelletti and Slaats each picked up three base hits in the win, while Cappelletti and Carmody led the team with a pair of RBI apiece. Jacob Hutcherson picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings with one run allowed. Jake Ostrowski earned his fourth save of the season, most in the CCAC this season, by closing out the final two innings of the day.
With the win, Trinity moves up into fourth place in the CCAC standings with three games left to play in the regular season. The Trolls finish out league play this week, with a three-game series beginning at Saint Xavier on Friday, and closing with a doubleheader at Schaaf Athletic Complex on Saturday.
