UPLAND, Ind. – Trinity Women's Basketball tipped off the 2024-25 season on Saturday afternoon, as the Trolls fell on the road, 87-56 at Taylor (Ind.).
Bibi Mercado and Kyla Smith led Trinity with 12 points apiece; Mercado finished with four assists while going 5-for-9 from the floor. Smith led the Trolls in trips to the free throw line, going 8-for-11 from the stripe. Desire Berrien posted 10 points and 11 rebounds to secure the team's first double-double of the year.
The host Trojans would take a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 23-14, with Mercado scoring half of the team's point total in the opening period. Trinity's shot would go cold in the second quarter, as the team went 1-for-8 from the floor allowing Taylor to increase their lead to 39-22 at the half.
The Trolls bounced back in the third quarter, as Amena Alexander hit a pair of threes to help close the gap. Berrian's layup at the 2:56 mark would bring Trinity to within 12 points, 50-38, but that would be as close as they would get, as Taylor kicked off the fourth quarter on a 17-1 run to put the game out of reach.
Trinity will look to bounce back on Wednesday, when they travel to Southfield, Mich. for a meeting with Lawrence Tech. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
