Trinity stumbles in overtime to St. Francis

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - Rallying from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Trinity rallied to force overtime on Tuesday night but would come up just short against St. Francis, 74-70 inside DeVos Gymnasium.

The Trolls would open the night on a 7-2 run behind buckets from Desire Berrien and Destiny Goodwin, and would hold the lead throughout the first quarter. St. Francis responded at the start of the second period, scoring eight unanswered to take a 26-19 lead at the 7:13 mark. Trinity would briefly even the score with a pair of Berrien free throws, but the Saints would take a 33-30 lead into the half.

Scores from Mercado, Goodwin, and Amena Alexander would tie the game in the third quarter, but Trinity still were unable to reclaim their first-quarter advantage. The Trolls would score six straight points to start the fourth quarter, with Kyla Smith's layup at the 8:53 mark putting Trinity back in front, 51-49.

Both teams would trade the lead eight more times in the fourth quarter, including on Alexander's three-pointer that put Trinity ahead 64-63 with 2:07 left to play. St. Francis would get the game-tying point on a trip to the free throw line with 50 seconds left, and neither team could find the game-winning shot before heading to overtime.

The Saints would take control, scoring the first six points of the extra session and holding the lead the rest of the way.

Alexander finished with a team-high 19 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor with four rebounds. Mercado posted 16 points with six rebounds and six steals, while Smith tallied 11 points and four boards. Goodwin scored 10 points with five boards and a pair of steals.

The Trolls continue after the Thanksgiving break by hosting Indiana South Bend at the DeVos Gymnasium on Saturday, December 7.
