PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Matching up for the second time in five days, Trinity Men's Soccer battled through extra time but would survive and advance in a 2-1 win over Saint Xavier, in the CCAC Tournament Quarterfinals at the Schaaf Athletic Complex on Thursday.
Following a 5-0 win over the Cougars on Saturday, the Trolls would earn the No. 3 seed in the postseason tournament and face Saint Xavier in the quarterfinal round for the second year in a row. A scoreless first half would eventually lead to the visitors taking the lead in the 78th minute, recording Saint Xavier's first goal against Trinity in over two years.
The Trolls would respond, out-shooting their opponents 12-3 in the second half and eventually drawing a penalty in the 88th minute. Sophomore David Hernandez would put the ball past the keeper with a soft shot to the right, evening the score and forcing extra time.
Hernandez would strike again in the 101st minute, scoring his third game-winning goal of the year and his 12th overall, giving the Trolls the win and advancing his team to the semifinals for the second year in a row.
The Trolls will now host No. 7 seeded Holy Cross, as the Saints earned the upset win in their quarterfinal matchup at Judson. Kickoff against the Saints with a spot in the CCAC Tournament Final on the line is scheduled for Monday, November 11.
