Trolls drop three of four in series with Olivet Nazarene

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Battling through high winds, Trinity Baseball dropped a doubleheader to Olivet Nazarene on Friday, before recovering to take a split on the road against the Tigers on Saturday.

Game 1

• The Tigers would strike first in the top of the 2nd, with a home run to left for an early 1-0 lead.

• Trinity would bounce back in the third, as Oliver Carmody tied the game with a solo home run, and Anthony Cappelletti put the Trolls in front with a two-run home run just two at-bats later.

• Another solo home run for the Tigers, along with a two-out RBI single would even the score in the top of the 5th, 3-3.

• The Trolls would reclaim the lead, after the first two batters were hit by pitch, allowing Darreon Mickell to drive in a run on a single through the left side.

• Olivet Nazarene would take advantage of the wind blowing out to left, as a one-out single and walk would set the table for a go-ahead three-run home run, putting the Tigers in front 6-4.

• After a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases, the Trolls were unable to capitalize, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th.

Preston Moore would finish 2-for-3 at the plate, with a walk and run scored. Mickell finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and RBI.

After a leadoff walk from Carmody in the bottom of the 1st, the Trolls took a 2-0 lead on Carter Chaney's home run to left.

• The Tigers rallied with a two-run shot of their own in the top of the 2nd to tie the game at 2-2. In the 3rd inning, Olivet Nazarene would take their first lead of the game, scoring three runs on three hits to go up 5-2.

Omar Wright's solo shot in the 5th would close the gap for the Trolls, 5-3.

• Olivet Nazarene would score on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 6th, but Trinity would come back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, on Tommy Schaaf's sac fly, and a two-run double from Zach Hesse.

• The Tigers would pull away down the stretch, scoring two runs in the 7th, and two more in the 8th to go up 10-5.

Brian Huttner would get a run back in the 8th inning, with his first home run of the season.

• Huttner and Chaney would both finish with two hits in the game, while Chaney and Hesse led the Trolls with a pair of RBI apiece.

Noah McFadzean threw a perfect 9th inning out of the bullpen, striking out one.

• Trinity pounced early, scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the 1st as the series moved to Bourbonnais. Carmody, Moore, Huttner, and Mickell all recorded RBI singles during the rally.

• Three more runs for the Trolls in the 2nd inning, on three hits and two errors, pushed the Trinity lead to 7-0.

• Olivet Nazarene would plate two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Trolls would score twice in the 3rd, on a sac fly from Carmody and a Tiger error for a 9-2 lead.

• Chaney's sac fly in the 4th inning added another run to the total, and the Trolls would extend their lead further with two more in the 6th, for a 12-2 advantage.

• The first three batters in the Trinity lineup finished with three hits each, as Carmody went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Logan Strutz picked up the win, throwing all seven innings and striking out five.

Game 4

• The Tigers would go up early, scoring two runs apiece in the 1st and 2nd innings for a quick 4-0 lead.

• Another run in the bottom of the 4th would push the advantage to 5-0.

• Trinity put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the 6th, when Chaney was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, setting up Moore's two-run home run.

• The Trolls would load the bases in the 8th with one out, but were unable to convert as Olivet Nazarene closed out the series by taking three of four.

Next Up

• Trinity will kick off a four-game series with CCAC leaders St. Francis, beginning Friday, April 19. The series will finish with a doubleheader at the Schaaf Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 20.
