PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Christopher Nielsen earned a complete-game victory on Friday, but Trinity Baseball would fall in the series with conference leaders St. Francis over the weekend, taking one of four against the Fighting Saints.
Game 1
St. Francis 8, Trinity 2
WP: Daly (8-1) • LP: Hadley (3-3)
HR: Janik (TCC) (4)
• A two-out double would lead to St. Francis scoring the first run of the day in the bottom of the first, as a wild pitch and throwing error would put the Saints in front early, 1-0.
• Connor Janik's single in the 2nd inning followed by an error and passed ball would allow the sophomore to score and tie the game, 1-1.
• The home team would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring four runs on four hits and a pair of Trinity errors for the 5-1 lead.
• Janik put another run on the board for the Trolls, with a solo home run in the top of the 4th to cut the deficit to 5-2. St. Francis would add three more insurance runs in the 6th inning, as Trinity were unable to keep pace in the series opener.
• Janik led the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game 2
Trinity 7, St. Francis 4
WP: Nielsen (6-1) • LP: Michalak (1-1)
HR: Chaney (TCC) (2)
• The Trolls struck early in game two on Friday, with Omar Wright scoring a leadoff single in the 1st inning, then scoring on Janik's groundout. Oliver Carmody, who reached on a fielder's choice, would plate the team's second run on Preston Moore's RBI single.
• A leadoff double in the bottom of the 1st would lead to a run for the Saints, but Trinity increased their lead in the top of the 3rd. Back-to-back singles from Carmody and Janik led off the frame, and a bunt single from Benson Holleman would score two runs following a St. Francis error, putting the Trolls ahead 4-1.
• In the bottom of the 3rd the Saints would get a run back on a double steal, but Trinity posted two more runs in the 4th. Carter Chaney hit a solo shot to right center to lead off the inning, then after Zach Hesse's double, the freshman scored on a sacrifice from Carmody.
• St. Francis closed the gap in the bottom of the 6th, scoring twice on back-to-back doubles to make it a 6-4 Trinity advantage. Janik would add an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the 9th, as the Trolls split the Friday doubleheader.
• Christopher Nielsen went the distance, pitching nine innings and earning his sixth win of the year while allowing four runs and striking out eight.
• Five Trolls would have multi-hit performances, as Janik finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a triple. Carmody finished 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Game 3
St. Francis 9, Trinity 3
WP: Malczewski (4-2) • LP: Strutz (2-5)
• Both teams would trade runs in the 1st inning as the series moved to Palos Heights on Saturday. The Saints would briefly take a lead with a two-run triple, before an RBI fielder's choice from Janik, and a run-scoring double from Brian Huttner tied the game at 2-2.
• The visitors reclaimed the lead in the top of the 2nd with a two-out RBI single, then made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly in the 4th inning.
• The Saints would put the game out of reach with two more runs in the 5th and three in the 6th, taking advantage of two Trinity errors during the rally to go up 9-2.
• Justin Egan and Tanner Sobkoviak each threw one inning of relief apiece, retiring the side in order in their appearances.
• Wright would lead the offense from the leadoff spot, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Game 4
St. Francis 9, Trinity 8 (10 innings)
WP: Blazekovich (1-0) • LP: Munoz (1-4) • Sv: Dant (3)
HR: Chaney (TCC) (3)
• Trinity would take an early lead, collecting five base hits and scoring three times in the 1st inning. Janik and Huttner each had run-scoring singles, while Hesse would score Holleman on a squeeze bunt for the 3-0 advantage.
• A leadoff double would result in a run for the Saints in the top of the 2nd, but Chaney's one-out single followed by a two-out run-scoring triple from Janik reclaimed a three-run lead for the Trolls through two innings.
• St. Francis would score two more in the 3rd before taking their first lead of the day in the top of the 5th. A wild pitched tied the game at 4-4, followed by an RBI double to put the visitors ahead 5-4.
• Chaney put the Trolls back in front with his two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th. The Trolls then loaded the bases later in the inning, allowing another run to score on Huttner's groundout for a 7-5 lead.
• A two-run double would tie the game in the top of the 8th. Trinity would get runners on base in the 8th and 9th but were unable to push across the go-ahead run as the game headed to extra innings.
• A leadoff single for the Saints, followed by a wild pitch and sac bunt would set up a two-run inning for the visitors, who took the lead on two hits and an error. Trinity would plate one run on Huttner's RBI single, but the Trolls would strand two in scoring position to close out the series.
• The first five batters in the Trinity lineup would go a combined 13-for-27 (.481) in the game. Huttner finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Janik went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Carmody finished 2-for-5 with a double and four runs scored.
