Trolls take three of four over Indiana South Bend

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Scoring 41 runs over 29 innings, Trinity Baseball had their highest scoring series of the season to date as the Trolls took three of four over Indiana South Bend on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1
Indiana South Bend 3, Trinity 2

• Trinity would break through in the bottom of the 4th, as Oliver Carmody was hit by a pitch, Preston Moore singled, and Benson Holleman walked to load the bases. Tommy Schaaf would reach on a fielder's choice that allowed Carmody and Moore to come home for the 2-0 advantage.

• A leadoff single for the Titans in the 5th inning, followed by a stolen base and wild pitch set up an RBI groundout for IUSB to cut the deficit to 2-1.

• In the 6th inning a solo shot to right center for the Titans would tie the game at 2-2. In the 7th, the visitors would take the lead on a one-out RBI single.

• The Trolls would load the bases again in the bottom of the 7th, with a one-out single from Omar Wright, followed by a Camody double. Connor Janik was given a free base on an intentional walk, but two strikeouts would end the threat and give the Titans the win in the opening game.

• Schaaf scored two RBI on the day to lead the office, while five Trolls would each collect one base hit apiece.

Game 2

• A one-out single from Schaaf in the 4th inning, followed by Darreon Mickell's double down the left field line gave the Trolls the chance to take the first lead of the game, on a fielding error that allowed Schaaf to score and give Trinity a 1-0 edge.

• South Bend responded in the top of the 5th, starting with a lead-off home run and finishing with a total of four runs on four hits.

• Janik put another run on the board in the bottom half of the inning, with a one-out RBI double scoring Carmody to cut the Titan lead to 4-2.

• In the 7th inning, Janik would lead off with a single, then score on Anthony Cappelletti's RBI double to center. After a Brian Huttner single, Cappelletti would score on Mickell's fielder's choice to tie the game. Trinity then took the lead on a sac fly from Holleman, and Wright's two-out RBI single for a 6-4 score.

• Huttner would add to the Trolls lead in the bottom of the 8th, scoring an RBI double that brought home Janik and a three-run advantage.

Jacob Hutcherson would pick up his sixth win of the season, pitching 5.2 innings out of the pen. Ulysses Munoz earned save no. 7, extending his lead in the CCAC with a scoreless frame in the top of the 9th.

• Wright and Janik each went 3-for-5 at the plate, with Janik picking up a double and two runs scored.

Game 3
Trinity 15, Indiana South Bend 5

• South Bend would strike first as the series turned to the Titans home field on Saturday, with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.

• Both sides would trade runs in the 3rd inning, before a three-run home run in the bottom of the 4th would give South Bend a 5-1 advantage.

• Trinity broke through in a big way in the 5th frame, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs on just three hits. Four walks, three batters hit by pitch, and a fielding error allowed the Trolls to claim a 11-5 lead. Carmody had the lone extra-base hit of the rally, scoring Mickell and Carter Chaney.

• The Trolls added three more in the top of the 7th, highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI double from Janik.

Mike Zelko earned his first win as a Troll, pitching the final three and a third innings with just one run and two hits allowed.

• Schaaf would finish 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the Trinity offense. Holleman reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Game 4
Trinity 17, Indiana South Bend 3 (7 innings)

• After the Titans scored a run in the bottom of the 1st, Trinity exploded for six runs in the 2nd inning, then five more in the 3rd. Mickell had a two-run single in the 2nd, and Carmody's two-run home run in the third highlighted the rally as the Trolls went ahead 11-2.

• Three more runs in the 5th inning, including a two-out, two-run triple from Chaney pushed the lead to 14-3.

• Before ending the game early on run rule, the Trolls added three more in the top of the 7th, as Ryan Grand and Wright each recorded RBI.

Christopher Nielsen earned the win with five and a third innings pitched, allowing just one run and striking out 11.

• Moore would go 4-for-5 at the plate, with two RBI and three runs scored. Wright and Carmody each finished with three-hit performances in the win.

Next Up

The Trolls look to extend their win streak on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to St. Ambrose. First pitch in a CCAC doubleheader with the Bees is set for 1:00 p.m.
