Trolls suffer straight-set loss at Calumet

WHITING, Ind. – A pair of close losses in the first two sets on Thursday night put the Trolls down early, as Trinity fell on the road at Calumet in straight sets, 29-27, 25-23, 25-18.

Team Leaders

Alex Costa led the Trinity attack with ten kills on the night, along with two aces.

Ryan Schmidt tallied 20 assists, while Tim Slattery pitched in with 13 assists and one block.

Diego Quiroz finished with three digs to lead the Troll defense, as well as five kills and a .400 attack percentage.

Game 1
Calumet 29, Trinity 27

• The Trolls took an early 9-5 lead after a block from Quiroz and Mike Hay, and would hold a four-point advantage as late as 19-15.

• Calumet tied the game with a 4-0 rally at 19-19, but Trinity responded with four of the next five points to lead 23-20.

•The Crimson Wave used two blocks and three kills to put together a 5-1 run and take set point at 25-24. A kill from Hay and a block from Hay and Nick Mioni were two of the three points for Trinity as they survived three set points, but would come up just short at 29-27.

Game 2
Calumet 25, Trinity 23

• Trinity again led early, going up 8-5 on a kill by Mioni that capped a 4-1 run for the visitors.

• Calumet scored 10 of the next 12 points to move in front, 15-10.

• A block from Hay and Slattery would bring the Trolls back to within a point at 17-16, before another Crimson Wave rally would allow Calumet to retain their advantage.

• With set point at 24-20, the Trolls again held off three straight points, but would come up short on the potential game-tying play, and drop game two, 25-23.

Game 3
Calumet 25, Trinity 18

• The Crimson Wave controlled the third set from start to finish, going up by as much as 15-5 in the early portions of the game.

• The Trolls would put together a five-point run late in the set highlighted by a kill and ace from Costa to close the gap to 22-17, but three of the next four points would go to Calumet to close out the night.

Next Up

• Trinity returns to DeVos Gymnasium on Tuesday night, when they will celebrate Senior Night before their match with Olivet Nazarene. First serve with the Tigers is set for 7:00 p.m.
