Trolls split on Day One of CCAC Softball Tournament

CROWN POINT, Ind. – Trinity Softball split their first two games at the CCAC Tournament on Thursday, battling between weather delays to knock off St. Ambrose 5-3 in the first round, before falling to top-seeded Saint Xavier to fall to the lower bracket at the Crown Point SportsPlex.

Game 1
Trinity 5, St. Ambrose 3
WP: Halmon (8-9) • LP: Ralfs (4-9) • Sv: Kuehner (2)

• While the first at-bat got underway at the scheduled 3pm start time, both teams endured a 90-minute weather delay before continuing. The Bees would put the first runs on the board in the top of the 2nd, with a two-out RBI triple, and another run-scoring single for a 2-0 advantage.

• The Trolls moved in front during the 3rd inning, as Charlie Sartoris' base hit would lead to the senior scoring on Alex Hofman's sac fly. Kamryn Koontz then drove in two runs on the next at-bat, scoring Giulia Cianfriglia and Maddy McIntyre to put Trinity in front, 3-2.

• Trinity tacked on two more runs during the bottom of the 5th, after a pair of walks to lead off the inning allowed Koontz to drive in another run on a base hit. Jolie Robertson then singled to score Koontz and the Trolls went up 5-2.

• The Bees would get a run in the 6th inning, but Abbey Kuehner secured her second save of the year, coming on in relief to get the final out of the 6th before working around a two-out single to secure the win.

• Koontz finished 2-for-3 in the win, scoring three RBI and a run. Sartoris went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base.

Myleigh Halmon got the win, throwing 5.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Game 2
Saint Xavier 8, Trinity 0 (5 innings)
WP: Summers (17-6) • LP: Lorscheider (8-10)

• The Cougars would strike early, leading from start to finish after a three-run 1st inning.

• Trinity would put a runner on base in both 1st and 2nd innings, but were unable to generate a rally.

• In the top of the 3rd, singles from Sartoris and Maddy McIntyre followed by a Cougar fielding error loaded the bases with just one out, but a line drive to first allowed Saint Xavier to escape with a lineout double play to end the threat.

• Saint Xavier would add two more runs in the 2nd inning and three in the 3rd to reach the eight-run advantage needed to end the game early on run rule after five innings.

• McIntyre had the lone multi-hit performance for the Trolls, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.

Next Up

• Trinity will look to extend their postseason run tomorrow afternoon, as they take on Roosevelt in a lower bracket matchup scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
