PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – After an even first half, the Trolls would take a second-half lead before the visiting Cougars would get hot from beyond the arc, as Trinity fell at home on Wednesday night, 95-76 to Saint Xavier.
The Trolls would work back from a 13-point deficit in the first half, after the Cougars went ahead 35-22 with 7:45 left until the halftime break. Back-to-back threes from Danny Staskunas and a pair of Garrett Greene buckets would fuel an 11-2 run, and a trip to the free throw line from Chris Cross in the closing seconds would result in a 40-40 deadlock at the break.
Trinity would hold a small lead thoughout most of the early portions of the second half, going up by as much as seven on a three from Cross, 56-49 at the 15:22 mark. From there, the Trolls would get just one field goal over the following six and a half minutes, while Saint Xavier would connect on six threes in that same stretch, using a 23-4 run to move in front, 72-60 with 9:18 to play.
The Trolls were unable to make a run down the stretch, as Saint Xaiver pulled away in the closing minutes.
Cross would lead all scorers with 30 points, going 8-for-16 from the floor and 10-12 from the free throw line. Staskunas posted 14 points, along with four assists. Ognjen Petkovic finished with 11 points and seven boards.
Trinity will look to recover on Saturday, when they head north to take on Viterbo. Tipoff from Wisconsin is set for 3:00 p.m.
