LA CROSSE, Wisc. – Trinity would hold an eight-point lead in the second half, but a late scoring drought would be enough for the hosts Viterbo to rally down the stretch as the Trolls fell on the road Saturday afternoon, 77-64 to the V-Hawks.
The Trolls would go scoreless over the first four minutes, before Garrett Greene's bucket got Trinity on the board down 6-2 at the 15:56 mark. Viterbo would lead by as much as ten in the first half, 21-11 with 9:07 remaining, but back-to-back threes from Kaden Eirhart helped Trinity bounce back.
A 7-0 run later in the half would cut the deficit to 25-24 with 5:06 until the halftime break. With a free throw from Donavyn Sayles in the final seconds, Trinity would pull even with Viterbo at the half, 29-29, behind 12 first-half points from Chris Cross.
Trinity took their first lead of the game on Johnny Dieck's three at the 18:55 mark of the second half, 32-31. An 11-2 run for the Trolls early in the second half would create their largest lead of the game, 46-38 on Cross' three with 14:25 remaining.
After Cross' bucket, the offense would dry up, as the Trolls went nearly five full minutes without a field goal. Viterbo would take a lead in that time, before Eirhart ended the drought with a game-tying three-pointer at the 9:31 mark, 51-51.
Another five-minute scoring drought would see the Trolls fall behind by double digits down the stretch as the V-Hawks closed out the game.
Cross would finish with 22 points to lead all scorers, while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Eirhart posted a season-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting while going 4-for-7 from three-point range.
The Trolls return to DeVos Gymnasium this Wednesday night, when they host Judson. Tipoff with the Eagles is set for 7:30 p.m.
