WHITING, Ind. – Bibi Mercado recorded a career high for the second game in a row, leading the Trolls with 22 points as Trinity picked up their second straight victory, 77-66 at Calumet on Wednesday night.
Overcoming a slow start and a 9-0 run for the home team in the first quarter, the Trolls cut a 17-10 deficit at the start of the second half into a one-point edge for the Crimson Wave at the break, 38-37. Calumet started the third quarter by scoring eight straight, but six straight points from Mercado, followed by a layup from Amena Alexander would bring the Trolls back into the game.
Desire Berrien's steal and layup would give Trinity their first lead since the early moments of the game, 50-48 with 2:14 left to play in the third, as the Trolls out-scored their opponents 21-2 over the final seven minutes of the quarter.
Trinity would maintain a lead throughout the fourth, securing back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a calendar year, since Trinity defeated the same pair of opponents on Jan. 6-10 last season.
Berrien collected 15 points in the win, going 6-for-8 from the field with six rebounds and three blocks. Amena Alexander pitched in with 14 points, and Destiny Goodwin recorded her 13th career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Trinity will look to make it three in a row when they return to DeVos Gymnasium on Saturday and host Indiana Northwest. Tipoff with the Redhawks is set for 1:00 p.m.
