PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – C.J. Lafin would lead the Trolls with six kills on the night, but Trinity would come up short down the stretch in all three sets with Governors State, in a non-conference matchup with the Jaguars inside DeVos Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The visitors would lead wire-to-wire in the opening set as the Trolls got off to a slow start, jumping out to an 11-4 lead and controlling the rest of the game on their way to a 25-17 win. Trinity bounced back in game two, taking their first lead of the night with a pair of Jaguar errors to start the set.
The Trolls would use a 6-1 run to go up 16-10, after a kill from Juvantae Thompson, a Samuel Kwan service ace, and a block from Ean Schultz and Connor Dargan. Leading 17-12, the Trolls would then surrender seven straight as Governors State moved back in front, 19-17. After back-to-back blocks from Evan Whaley tied the score at 20-20, the Jaguars would close out the game with five straight, winning 25-20.
The visitors again used a long rally, scoring nine out of 11 to take a 13-5 lead midway through game three. Trinity was able to respond, nearly evening the score with an 8-2 run highlighted by kills from Ethan Oros, Lafin, and Dargan. Trailing 18-17, the Trolls kept pace, but a late run would give Governors State set point at 24-20 as the Jaguars closed out the night with a 25-21 win.
The Trolls will look to bounce back on Thursday night, when they continue the current three-game homestand with a non-conference matchup with Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.). First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
