PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Trolls put together their best offensive performance of the young season, but Trinity were unable to secure a set as Aquinas (Mich.) took the sweep inside DeVos Gymnasium on Saturday.
In the opening game, a four-point run highlighted by a solo block from Conner Dargan would give the Trolls an early 7-6 lead. Trinity would remain in front with Sam Cain's kill at 12-10, but the Saints responded with seven of the next eight to go in front, 17-13. Kills from Cain and Austin Risser would fuel a three-point rally before Aquinas closed out the game with an 8-2 run.
Game two would see the Trolls take an early lead on back-to-back kills from Zach Supanich, 5-4, and Trinity would lead as late as 9-7 before the visitors would reclaim a narrow lead. Trinity would stay within a few points throughout the middle of the set, but the Saints closed out the win by scoring eight of the last nine points to go ahead two sets to none in the match.
Trinity were unable to claim a lead throughout game three, despite hitting a match-high .241 average and recording 13 kills in the set.
Supanich and Cain each finished with a team-high seven kills, while Brendan Rushton tallied five kills with a .300 attack percentage. Caden Figus picked up 18 assists, and Samuel Kwan led the defense with five digs.
Trinity will look to bounce back on Tuesday, when they host North Central (Ill.) for a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 pm.
