Trolls split home opener with Pomeroys

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. –Trolls Softball made their 2025 home debut on Wednesday afternoon, coming back from a four-run deficit in the final two innings to earn a walk-off victory during a split doubleheader with St. Mary-of-the-Woods at the Schaaf Athletic Complex.

The Trolls would take the opener in come-from-behind fashion, after the visiting Pomeroys broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the 6th with a grand slam. Trinity rallied in the bottom half of the inning, quickly tying the game again with four runs on three hits and an error. Ashley Plapp scored Kylie Simmons with her one-out RBI single, and Myleigh Halmon's double down the right field line would score two, evening the game at 8-8.

After Plapp worked around a two-out base hit in the top of the 7th, the Trolls would take the win with Simmons' leadoff single, and a pair of walks from Lauren Packard and Plapp. Erianna Claudio would be hit by a pitch with the bases load to earn the victory.

Halmon finished with five RBI in the win, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles, and her first home run of the season. In the circle, Halmon went 5.2 innings with four strikeouts, but Plapp would come on in relief and pick up her first collegiate win, going 1.1 innings without a run allowed.

In game two the Trolls would quickly take a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning, but the Pomeroys responded with a run in the top of the 2nd, and five more in the 3rd for a 6-3 lead. A solo home run from Simmons closed the gap in the 4th, but the visitors would get an insurance run in the 5th and work around two Trinity base hits over the final three innings to close out the game.

Simmons led the Trolls at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI, and a run scored. Plapp made her second appearance of the day, going three innings with just two hits and a walk allowed, finishing the day with 4.1 innings without a run allowed.

The Trolls return to Schaaf on Friday, when they host Harris-Stowe (Mo.) for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
