Trolls win on run rule in sweep over Harris-Stowe

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – A first-inning outburst set the tone early, as Trinity picked up a doubleheader sweep in non-conference play on Friday, defeating Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) by run rule in each game.

Trinity 14, Harris-Stowe 0 (5 inn.)
WP: Congoran (1-2) • LP: Phillips

The Trolls took control from the start, scoring ten runs on five hits and three errors in the 1st inning. The first five batters would reach base as Trinity took advantage of five walks and a hit by pitch during the rally. Myleigh Halmon and Emma Luther each would record two-run doubles in the frame.

The Hornets would be held to just two hits in the opening game, first on a bunt single in the 3rd, and again with a leadoff single in the 4th.

Halmon and Ariana Ikis each recorded two hits in the win, while Halmon and Erianna Claudio led the team with three RBI apiece.

Trinity 8, Harris-Stowe 0 (5 inn.)
WP: Lowden (1-0) • LP: Anderson

A pitcher's duel to start, both teams would be held without a base hit until the top of the 3rd, when the Hornets would place two runners in scoring position before starting pitcher Katie Lorscheider got the strikeout to end the threat.

The Trolls would be hitless until the bottom of the 4th, when Alex Hofman led off the frame with a single to left center. Kamryn Koontz would give Trinity the lead with her RBI single, scoring Anna Lisa Fluder, and Ava Valk doubled the advantage as her groundout allowed Emma Luther to come home for the 2-0 lead. Koontz would later score on a wild pitch as Trinity posted three runs in the inning.

Trinity would put the game away in the bottom of the 5th, taking advantage of two walks and two Harris-Stowe errors to post five runs on three base hits. Fluder would score a two-run triple, and Alana Harlow would end the game with her two-out single up the middle, scoring Koontz for the eighth run of the day.

Peyton Lowden would pick up the win in relief, throwing two innings without a hit allowed. Lowden, along with Lorscheider and Ashley Plapp would combine for just one hit allowed and six strikeouts over five innings of work.

The Trolls return to the Schaaf Athletic Complex next week for a pair of non-conference matchups, beginning on Wednesday when they host Indiana Tech. First pitch in the doubleheader with the Warriors is set for 2:00 p.m.
