Trolls earn home split with Viterbo

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity Softball would continue their CCAC run with their third split doubleheader to start league play, falling to the visiting Viterbo V-Hawks in the opener before rallying behind a complete-game win from Katie Lorscheider for game two.

Viterbo 5, Trinity 4
WP: Fuher • LP: Halmon (6-7)
HR: Halmon (2) • Fluder (1)

After working around an error in her first inning in the circle, Myleigh Halmon would give her team the early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st. The Trolls then extended their lead in the 2nd inning, on Anna Lisa Fluder's first home run of the season; a two-run shot that scored Caitlin Hernandez for a 3-0 Trinity lead.

Viterbo would rally in the top of the 3rd, getting on the board with a run on two hits and a walk. In the 5th inning, the visitors would pull even with a solo home run followed by three walks and a run-scoring single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Trolls would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the 6th with a two-out rally, as Lauryn Packard's base hit would drive in pinch runner Ariana Ikis for a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the 7th, Viterbo would take advantage of a two-out single and a walk, as the V-Hawks took the lead with a RBI double followed by back-to-back walks that loaded the bases and brought home the go-ahead run.

Packard would finish 2-for-3 at the plate, with an RBI; Fluder would also go 2-for-3, with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Trinity 6, Viterbo 3
WP: Lorscheider (2-6) • LP: Schultz

The V-Hawks would strike first in game two, with a solo home run in the top of the 2nd, but after two shutout innings the Trolls would rally in the bottom of the 3rd. The first two batters would reach base with Erianna Claudio's leadoff single and a throwing error on Kylie Simmons' ground ball to short.

A sac bunt would set the table for Kamryn Koontz to tie the game with an RBI groundout, then Packard would put Trinity in front with a run-scoring single. Packard would later score on a wild pitch to put the Trolls ahead 3-1.

Trinity would add to their lead in the 4th, scoring three runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run double from Halmon, and a run-scoring single from Koontz that put the Trolls up 6-1. Viterbo would push across a run in each of the 6th and 7th innings, but would come up short on the comeback as the Trolls closed out the split behind a complete game win from Katie Lorscheider.

Claudio and Halmon both finished with two hits in the win, as Claudio went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, along with a stolen base. Halmon finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, a run scored, and one of two doubles for the team. Lorscheider picked up the win with just five hits allowed while striking out five.

The Trolls return to the Schaaf Athletic Complex on Saturday, when they host St. Francis. First pitch with the Saints is set for 12:00 p.m.
