Box Score PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trinity jumped out to a comfortable first-quarter lead, but the Trolls had to hold off a second-half surge from the Grace Christian (Mich.) Tigers on Saturday, earning a 69-60 win inside DeVos Gymnasium.
Faith Davis led the way for the Trolls (6-5), scoring 18 points in the win by matching a career-high with six three-pointers made throughout the game. Destiny Goodwin came off the bench for 11 points, while Laila McNeal just missed a double-double, recording nine points with 11 rebounds.
Trinity held the opposition to just nine points in the first quarter, building a double-digit lead behind six points apiece from Davis and Hannah Schuringa. McNeal's put-back layup made it a 21-9 lead for the Trolls with just under a minute remaining in the period, as part of a 10-2 run.
The Tigers (4-3) battled back in the second, pulling to within two points as Trinity went nearly five full minutes without a field goal. Davis ended the drought with just 29 seconds remaining in the half, as the Trolls took a 31-28 lead at the break.
Grace Christian took their first lead of the day early in the third quarter, as a pair of free throws followed by a layup on the next possession put the visitors ahead 34-31 at the 8:03 mark. Goodwin evened the score moments later with a layup, kicking off a 13-2 that put the Trolls back in control.
The Trolls held on the rest of the way, maintaining a double-digit lead until the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.
Trinity steps back into conference play for their next test, as they have a ten-day break before travelling to Saint Xavier on Tuesday, December 20. Tipoff with the Cougars is set for 5:00 p.m.
