Defense dominates, Trolls back in playoff picture

Box Score

University Park, Ill. - Trinity Christian College women's basketball (13-12, 8-11 CCAC) knew what was at stake when they went on the road Wednesday evening to face Governors State (8-17, 7-11 CCAC). The Trolls took care of business thanks to a defense-first attitude and beat Governos State 68-56. The win for the Trolls now ties them with Holy Cross for seventh place in the CCAC standings. The top eight teams make the CCAC Playoffs.

The game was won at the free throw line. With four minutes remaining the Jaguars tied the score at 56. The Trolls put an end to the night by finishing the game on a 12-0 run and going eight for 10 from the free throw line. Thirteen of the Trolls 17 points in the fourth quarter came on free throws. Combine that with the defense limiting the Jaguars to 20% from the field in the final 10 minutes and it was a recipe for success.

Senior Gabby Kreykes scored 22 points and hauled in 10 rebounds while fellow senior Summer Cramer poured in 13 points. The x-factor was Trolls freshman Faith DavisShe scored 17 points, including four three-pointers. Fourteen of those 17 points came in the second quarter. With the Trolls trailing 18-11 in the second, Davis took over. She scored the Trolls next eight points to make it just a one-point lead for the Jaguars.

The victory snaps a four-game losing streak and the 56 points allowed were the fewest since Nov. 11 when the Trolls held Andrews University to 46 points.
