Box Score Chicago, Ill. - After trailing by 29 points early in the third quarter, Trinity Christian College women's basketball (14-15, 9-13 CCAC) cut #18 Saint Xavier University's (24-5, 21-1 CCAC) lead to just nine points early in the fourth quarter. The Cougars ended the game on a 26-9 run and ended the Trolls hopes of playing spoiler. The Cougars will advance to the CCAC Semifinals on Thursday night. It's the 15th consecutive win for Saint Xavier.
It was another remarkable performance for Trolls senior Gabby Kreykes. She completely dominated the third quarter scoring 13 of her 30 points in the period. The high powered Saint Xavier offense was firing on all cylinders though. The Cougars shot 47% (34-72) from the field and 43% (13-30) from the three-point line on the night.
The Trinity Christian offense was humming in the first period. Senior Summer Cramer buried a three ball and the Trolls took a 19-14 lead with 2:53 left in the quarter. Trinity trailed by just three points after the first period. The second quarter was the turning point in the game. The Cougars outscored Trinity Christian College 28-10 to take a 53-32 lead at the break.
As Saint Xavier began to make a run early in the third quarter, Kreykes saw enough. Her first points in the third quarter came on free throws with 3:39 remaining. She scored the final 13 points for the Trolls in the third quarter and then opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and the Cougar lead was cut to 70-61.
The great shooting of Saint Xavier paced them to the finish line for the 96-69 victory.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Tuesday was the 11th time Kreykes has scored 30+ points in a game.
- Senior Jasmine Glover provided a big night on the offensive end. She scored 13 points and tied her season high with 12 rebounds.
- Cramer hit three, three-pointers. In her last seven games has made two or more three-pointers.
- The Trolls did a great job attacking the hoop and getting to the free throw line. They took 34 free throws compared to 21 for Saint Xavier.
UP NEXT: Trinity Christian College is not done yet. The Trolls will get set to play in the NCCAA Tournament. A date and opponent is to be determined at a later date.
