Box Score Palos Heights, Ill. - Spectators walking out of DeVos Gymnasium couldn't help but feel energized after Trinity Christian College men's basketball (10-15, 6-12) went toe-to-toe with University of St. Francis (Ill.)(13-10, 9-9 CCAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Trolls fell 88-86 in overtime.
Down by 10 points with under seven minutes left in the game, senior James Pennington and junior Vince Overway chipped away at the Saints lead. With the Trolls trailing 72-70, Pennington hit a jump shot to tie the game at 72 apiece. St. Francis took back the lead, but Deon McLaughlin was fouled with 16 seconds left. Despite shooting just over 40% from the free throw line this year, McLaughin drilled both free throws. The Trolls stopped St. Francis on the final play of regulation and we went to overtime.
Trinity scored the first bucket of overtime on a layup from sophomore Braxton Barnhizer. St. Francis eventually took control though. They led 87-83. Pennington hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining, but it was too late. The Trolls fell 88-86.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- The efficiency from Pennington was on full display. He shot 11-for-18 from the field and went 4-for-7 from the three-point line.
- Overway and Pennington were playing off each other beautifully in the fourth quarter. Overway ended his night with 16 points. He was 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from the three-point line.
- McLaughlin's free-throws were huge late, but his physicality is always welcomed. He scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
- In his first game back since Jan. 15, freshman Brady Loerop scored eight points off the Trolls bench.
- The Trolls had a great fday from beyond the arc. They shot 40.9% (9-22) from three. In their last two games, the Trolls are shooting 43% (22-51) from three in their last two games.
UP NEXT: The Trolls will go on the road to take on Governor's State on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this year.
