Box Score 4 Palos Heights, Ill. - Trinity Christian College baseball (2-6) battled all weekend against William Penn (11-3) in a four game series, but dropped all four games. The Trolls were in every game, including Friday's 10 inning thriller that didn't go their way.
Despite the difficult weekend, senior Nick Andersen had a big series. He went 5-for-14 at the plate and is now hitting .393 for the season.
GAME 1 - William Penn 7, Trinity Christian 2 (W: Brian Thomas) (L: Jordan Cruz)
The Trolls knew the series would be tough, but the Statesmen Brian Thomas was a menace. He stymied the Trinity Christian College bats all afternoon and earned the win throwing a complete game (7 innings). The Trolls took an early 1-0 lead on an error from William Penn, but the Statesman responded with six runs in the second inning. The big frame proved too much to overcome and despite a single to drive in a run from junior Brock Bolser, the Trolls dropped the game 7-2.
Trinity had just three hits for the game. Senior Jordan Cruz had the one difficult inning but settled down. He went five innings while getting the loss. Junior Josh Bakke came out of the bullpen for one scoreless inning.
GAME 2 - William Penn 7, Trinity Christian 4 (W: Franklin Aparicio) (L: Adam Herron)
The Trolls led 4-2 in the seventh inning, on the verge of splitting the two game on Friday. With two outs, and two men on for William Penn, Alonzo Zuniga singled to tie the score up at four. The game went to extra innings and junior Adam Herron didn't allow a run in the eighth or ninth innings. But in the 10th, William Penn scored three times with two outs and pulled away with a 7-4 victory. Every time it looked like William Penn might have a big day at the plate, the Trolls limited the damage.
Senior Mike McIntyre was sensational on the mound. He allowed just one run over five innings of work. William Penn took a 1-0 lead in that third but junior Tyler Petersen had the answer with an RBI single to tie the score. In the sixth inning, the Statesman took a 2-1 lead, but the Trolls answered with three runs in the home-half of that inning. A sacrifice fly from freshman Preston Moore followed by RBI doubles from Petersen and junior Jordan Veldman gave the Trolls a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh.
Petersen went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Andersen, Moore and sophomores Oli Carmody and Miles Williams, each had two hits in the game.
The Trolls had three errors for the game.
GAME 3 - William Penn 6, Trinity Christian 3 (Wp: Nick George)(LP: Jake Ostrowski)
It was another masterful performance on the mound for a William Penn pitcher. Nick George pitched a complete game (7 innings) and allowed only three runs.
Trinity trailed 2-0 in the fourth inning when Carmody grounded out to score a run. Then it was junior Mike Moralez with an RBI single to tie the game. Junior Jake Ostrowski allowed six runs, but he went deep into the ballgame. He went 6.1 innings and with the game still tied at two in the sixth, Ostrowski allowed two runs, and then two more in the seventh.
The Trolls scored a run on a double from senior Nico Guttierez, but it was too late and Trinity fell 6-3.
GAME 4 - William Penn 4, Trinity Christian 0
The Trolls offense didn't have an answer for Ty Harter and Tanner Bedier. Harter pitched four scoreless innings while Bedier cleaned up the final three innings for the combined shutout. The Trolls had six hits, including two off the bat of Guttierez. After going hitless on Friday, Guttierez went 3-for-6 between the two games on Saturday.
William Penn did all of their scoring in the first two innings off junior Nathan Deckinga. He allowed a run in the first, and three in the second, but settled down nicely to pitch five innings. Bakke came out of the bullpen and didn't allow a run over two innings. He's now gone 4.2 scoreless innings this year.
