Box Score Palos Heights, Ill. - Trinity Christian College baseball (11-17, 7-8 CCAC) hosted Indiana University South Bend (10-23, 4-13 CCAC) on Saturday and the Trolls split the doubleheader. Trinity came back in game one for a 5-4 win in extra innings. The Trolls dropped the second game, 10-5.
Trinity was the away team for both games. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at South Bend, but changed due to field conditions.
Down 4-0 in the final inning of game one, Trolls senior Tyler Petersen led the seventh inning off with a double. Sophomore Oli Carmody came up and smacked a two-run bomb. Trinity made it 4-2.
After junior Mike Moralez singled, junior Nick Andersen followed it up with another single. Junior Hunter Slaats doubled to left field, and the Trolls tied the game at four.
In the ninth inning, Moralez singled to score junior Jordan Veldman and Trinity led 5-4. Junior Nathan Deckinga provided the final 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win.
In game two, South Bend scored early and often. They scored a run in each of the first five innings.
Trinity scored three times in the first inning though to take the early lead. A double from Andersen scored the first run of the game. Petersen and sophomore Miles Williams each drove in a run on singles.
South bend responded with three runs in the home-half on one swing of the bat. An Evan Allen three-run home run tied the score at three.
The Titans tacked on a run in each of the next three innings. The game got out of reach in the fifth inning when South Bend scored three runs on a throwing error. They led 10-3.
Trinity added two runs in the sixth on a double from Moralez, but ultimately fell, 10-5.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- No surprise – it was another huge day for Mike Moralez. He went 4-for-4 in game one, then had a 2-for-3 game in the second of the doubleheader.
- Junior Jake Ostrowski was lights out. He tossed 7.1 innings in game one. He allowed just four runs and struck out eight.
- Carmody was terrific at the dish as well. He went 3-for-4 in game one and 2-for-4 in the second game while driving in two runs.
- The Trolls were aided by three South Bend errors in the first game.
